Songs My Mother Taught Me (instrumental)

By | ACOUSTIC, ALL CONTENT, ALL SONGS, AMBIENT, CLASSICAL, ELECTRONIC, EXPERIMENTAL LANDSCAPES, INSTRUMENTAL, INTERPRETATIONS, MUSIC, NOSTALGIC, ORCHESTRAL, PHILOSOPHY

Charles Ives believed in the power of interpretation. There are countless perspectives to look at a single melody line from. One might be smooth and gentle, while the other rigid and chaotic. How a melody line is interpreted is also entirely subjective. This piece is our tribute to Charles Ives’ philosophy on music and what he did with it. Original lyrics by Antonín Dvořák, interpreted by Ives, then interpreted by MYCST.

On Raglan Road (instrumental)

Dug deep into my family past.

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare that I might one day rue;
I saw the danger, yet I walked along the enchanted way,
And I said, let grief be a fallen leaf at the dawning of the day.

On Grafton Street in November we tripped lightly along the ledge
Of the deep ravine where can be seen the worth of passion’s pledge,
The Queen of Hearts still making tarts and I not making hay –
O I loved too much and by such and such is happiness thrown away.

I gave her gifts of the mind I gave her the secret sign that’s known
To the artists who have known the true gods of sound and stone
And word and tint. I did not stint for I gave her poems to say.
With her own name there and her own dark hair like clouds over fields of May

On a quiet street where old ghosts meet I see her walking now
Away from me so hurriedly my reason must allow
That I had wooed not as I should a creature made of clay –
When the angel woos the clay he’d lose his wings at the dawn of day.

Dug deep into my family past.

On Raglan Road on an autumn day I met her first and knew
That her dark hair would weave a snare…

Healing In Pink (instrumental)

Do you remember a specific moment in your life when knew you broke a personal barrier? Some people call them revelations.

I just remember being mind blown from the recent trip out west. The perspectives I had on life changed drastically as I slowly tried growing out of my little box. I had a mic and laptop, guitar and a 200 year-old house. The room was bright pink. Whoever modeled it had a strong affinity for the color, but it reached me strangely and awkwardly where I needed it most. So I set up my equipment, recorded stomps on the old wooden floor planks, wrapped a rubber band around my guitar strings, let the dog inside, and started. Was it the color? The company? The age?

“Enlightenment is not imagining figures of light but making the darkness conscious.” – Carl Jung

The most beautiful thing about sharing a musical canvas is the insight into a different world of thought. A great collaboration is like having a stimulating conversation, where both parties are always enthralled by what they have to say. In this exchange, Ichion had a track of ambient, glitchy sounds in which he specializes. We used that energy – the swells of glass-textured sound waves, the prickling static – and wrote a melody and lyrics that were appropriate for both the music and song title.

“Theravada” is a devout school of Buddhism drawing its teachings from the earliest record of such knowledge. When first listening to Ichion’s initial track, we couldn’t help but recognize the constant droning of a low frequency. Our guess was that it was Ichion’s intent to reference Buddhist chanting, such as the OM mantra. The first who used this kind of meditation must have been aware of its physiological effects on the body. According to Ajay Anil Gurjar and Siddharth A. Ladhake’s journal on “Time-Frequency Analysis of Chanting Sanskrit Divine Sound “OM” Mantra”, they state that “Mantra is intrinsically related to sound and sound is reverberating in everything in this universe. A Mantra is a sound repeated over and over until it integrates into our consciousness – frees the mind from its constant doing, and elevates us to an altered state of awareness.” In other words, frequency is the catalyst of our world, so how could it not affect our body?

When people collaborate, a beautiful clashing of perspectives creates something beautiful. When two siblings collaborate, I believe it becomes stronger. A chord progression that speaks love. A melody line without an emotional shell. As the inspiration grows, the arrangement grows. My sister and I have been making music together for a large portion of our lives. Over the years we came to grow within each other through the creative process. This song started with just her, me, and the acoustic. I wanted to twist the line between happy and sad. After recording most of the arrangement, I realized the song was truly influenced by the original spirit of the idea caught in the acoustic guitar. It’s amazing how powerful simplicity can be when it’s backed by the encouraging essence of siblinghood. Words come out in a way they wouldn’t otherwise. More ideas are manifested. More ideas are explored. This is a good example.
